Helping one family at a time

It starts with one family. Then the next.

One Sixtieth pairs a family in need with a sponsor who helps them every month, found through their local school. The child stays home and in school. The sponsor watches the family's life by video.

About One Sixtieth

One Sixtieth connects people who want to help with children and families who need it most. Directly, one family at a time.

The name

A sixtieth: leave a corner. An old Jewish law tells farmers not to harvest the corners of their fields, but to leave them for the poor. The rabbis set the minimum at one-sixtieth of the harvest. Today the field is a salary. One-sixtieth of a good one is small for you, and enough to keep a child in school and a family together.

One: we are all one. There is less of a line between "me" and "them" than it seems. When you help someone else, you help yourself. The giver and the receiver are part of the same whole.

Why children, and why there

Children have the most to gain. They need compassion most, and it changes the most for them. Help that reaches a child early shapes everything after.

A little goes a long way. A monthly amount that barely registers in Europe or the US can keep a child in school and a family on its feet elsewhere. One Sixtieth closes that gap, so every dollar does the most it can.

How it works

  1. A school introduces a family. We work through elementary schools in India, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Cambodia. Teachers know their community better than any form.
  2. We verify. The family shares a few short videos, and the school confirms who they are.
  3. A sponsor helps every month, directly, and follows the family's life through video updates.
